Answered Question - Disney Parks Moms Panel

  • I'm taking my son to WDW for the 1st time on 08/23 for his middle school graduation. Due to my health/Cancer, I'm worried he might miss a lot as I can't walk a lot so I want to make it special - any ideas? I know about the hat, button & Cake. Thanks

  • Hi Melissa!

What a special treat for your son!  As for your health and your fight with cancer, I haven't had the chance to meet you, but I'm so proud of you!  The joy you'll experience from being at Walt Disney World with your family will be tremendous medicine.  It's amazing how smiles and laughter can warm the soul.

Being that this will be your son's first visit to Walt Disney World, I would suggest finding a small handful of attractions, shows, and even recreation options that will be "must-do's" for your vacation.  That way, you can feel free to take your time and enjoy spontaneous experiences.

When I go to Walt Disney World with my family, we like to take our time and savor the experiences we stumble upon.  When heading to our next destination, we may pause and watch some "streetmosphere" (performers who entertain guests at random locations around the theme parks).  If we're feeling a little tired, we may go back to our resort and hang out at the pool.  If we're feeling a little hungry, we may find a bench to sit down and enjoy a snack while soaking in our surroundings (instead of eating on the go).

So, I wouldn't worry about your son missing out on special experiences.  The opportunity you're giving him to experience Walt Disney World for the first time with his family will itself be a special experience that he will cherish for a lifetime.

Since that wasn't a definitive list of suggestions, I'll leave you with one quick one.  If your son doesn't already have his own camera, buy him one that he can take with him.  While you're on vacation, encourage him to take as many family pictures as possible.  Family pictures that memorialize significant experiences like a Walt Disney World vacation are precious souvenirs.

Stay well and I hope you enjoy this wonderful experience you're about to have with your family in a few short months!
