My 14 year old has to wear a hinged knee brace on out upcoming Walt Disney trip. We have 5 day water park passes too. What restrictions will he have for Park and water rides?

    Hi Tina,

Thanks for visiting the Disney Parks Moms Panel with your vacation planning question!

I'm sorry to hear about your sons injury. Approximately five-years ago, my son underwent reconstructive surgery on his knee and he was in a hinged knee brace and wheelchair for our Walt Disney World Resort vacation. As frustrated as he was about his injury, being at Disney really helped to brighten his spirits. My sons brace was unable to get wet, as the water would damage it. Without knowing your sons medical restrictions and limitations, it is difficult to accurately answer your question. You are definitely going to want to speak with his physician to see exactly what he is allowed to do. For example, does he need to wear his brace at all times in order to prevent further injury? If so, unfortunately, the majority of the water rides are not going to be an option for him. The water slides twist and turn, and it would be awful for him to re-injure himself. That all being said, I've been to Disney several times while wearing a walking boot / ankle brace and I was able to ride many of the thrill rides. My injury was such that jostling me around didn't pose a risk of re-injury. Once you know exactly what his limitations are, you will be better able to make the judgement call of what he can safely ride. You can visit the Guests with Mobility Disabilities page for information on accommodations that your son may be eligible for.

I hope this helps and that your family had a wonderful time together.

    Wishing you magical memories,

    Kaylene
