Our 4 year old son wants to go to Disney World, but he has life threatening food allergies. We are concerned about the food in the park, or eating in restaurants. What information can you give me on this?

Disney World works very hard to accommodate guests with food allergies. I have several sources of information for you.

First, go to the website allearsnet.com. Click on the "search" button (near the top right) and search on "food allergies." You should get several hits that are helpful. Also, try searching there on your son's specific allergies (dairy, gluten, peanuts, etc.) and you may get more helpful hits. Also, the menus for almost all of the WDW restaurants are available at allearsnet.com. Just search on the word "menu."

Also, there is a book called PassPorter's Open Mouse for Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line. This is available in major bookstores and on Amazon.com. It is the most comprehensive guide available for guests with special needs, including food issues.

If you are very concerned about eating out, you could stay in one of the villa-style rooms on WDW property that have full kitchens. You could prepare most of your son's meals yourself. For pricing and availability on villa rooms, call 407-W-DISNEY.

If you choose to dine at WDW restaurants, there are many strategies to keep your son safe. First, whenever making any reservation at a table service meal, make sure to tell your reservationist about the allergy in your party (and then remind your server upon arrival). Almost always a chef will come out to speak with you about your needs to ensure that they are preparing your food properly. Meal reservations and special requests can be made by calling 407-WDW-DINE.

If you have further concerns, you could call the main Disney switchboard and ask to be connected to the executive chef's office at each of the theme parks. They will be able to email you list of allergy-friendly foods that are available at many of the counter service restaurants in the parks.

I hope this gives you some resources to help you plan your son's trip.
