I want to take my now 10 year old grandson on a Disney Cruise. My concern is that I will have to be chasing him around the ship the entire time. Is it safe to let him go off on certain adventures on his own? I suspect we will travel in the next year.

    Hi, Julie!

Congratulations on considering a Disney Cruise with your grandson!  One of the greatest aspects of  a Disney Cruise Line vacation is that each member of your family will think the voyage was tailor-made for him or her -- it's amazing how they do that!

My son was 10 on our last Disney Cruise.  With our 7-year-old son, we registered him initially for Disney's Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab -- which required for either my husband or me to check them both in and out.  However, since he was a few weeks from turning 11, he was invited to join in the activities at Edge -- the tween hangout for 11-13 year olds. Being under 12, we still had to check him in and out of Edge, but he was given a little more freedom there with more "mature" games, activities and events.  From Edge, he could contact us in our stateroom or on our wave phones if he wanted to do something outside of the club.

All the youth activities clubs host times which take the kids outside of the actual clubs -- scavenger hunts, tours and special events. And there's so much in the clubs that one of the hardest things you'll do is try to coax your grandson out of the club!

As a family, we always peruse our Personal Navigator for all the ship's activities for the various ages, and we decide on what we'll do together and separately.  My husband and I enjoy spending time at the adult pool, at the spa or fitness center or at an adult-only restaurant or club when the kids are enjoying themselves at the youth clubs. Then, as a group, we'll dine together, see a show, swim or attend a family-oriented game.

I hope this helps. Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
