This year is our first trip to Disney World. My oldest daughter passed away a few years ago. Each year we remember her with a birthday celebration and acts of kindness. This year we will be at Disney on her birthday. Any ideas on activities in remembrance?

A warm welcome to you, Kathryn! Thank you for coming to the Disney Parks Moms Panel with your amazing question.

Performing random acts of kindness on your daughter’s birthday sounds like an amazing way to celebrate her life. As you may already know, Walt Disney World is truly magical and one of the things that makes it such a wonderful place is the kindness and magic that Cast Members give to Guests. What you may not know is that there are many Guests who also like to spread extra pixie dust themselves to other Guests! This sounds like a wonderful way to spend your princess’s birthday.

You can purchase several inexpensive souvenirs and pass them out to other children (with their parent’s permission). You can attach a small note to the items such as “You have been pixie dusted in celebration of our daughter’s life on her birthday.” You may include her name if you wish. This would work well with trading pins, stuffed animals, balloons, Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream Bars, etc.

Bring small containers of bubbles, like the ones you can find at party stores for weddings, and pass them out to others before a parade or fireworks show. The children around you can blow bubbles while waiting for the show to start. The bubbles will travel upwards to the sky... Also, I bet their parents will be thankful you gave their little ones something to do while waiting!

If you are dining at a Table Service restaurant, you can purchase a dessert and ask your server to choose a family to give it to after you leave. You can include a note such as, “Here is a little something to make your vacation extra special, in remembrance of our ‘sweet’ Angel on her birthday.”

Lastly, do not forget the Cast Members! My family likes to bring small 'Thank-You' notes to give to Cast Members who are extra kind to us. They get a big kick out of it, and that small gesture goes a long way!

    Have a magical day, Kathryn!

Hi, I’m Rachel! I am a “boy mom” to two rowdy little men at home and married to my high school sweetheart. I am fortunate enough that my prince charming loves all things Disney just as much as I do! For me, planning a trip to Walt Disney World can be just as magical as being there. It brings our family together as we dream, plan, and count down the days. I would be honored to help plan your visit and share in your family’s very own magic! Learn More About Rachel
