My use year begins in June. Does that mean that I can't book a cruise using points in the last 4 months of the use year, i.e., Feb thru May? If so, what if I used borrowed points from 2015? Thanks

    Hi Kathleen!

It sounds like you are talking about something known as the “Rule of Four”. I think I can help you understand how it works and when you can and cannot book a Disney Cruise Line vacation.

The Rule of Four states that you cannot book and travel on The Disney Collection (excluding Disneyland Resort Hotels in California and Tokyo Disney Resort), Concierge Collection and Adventurer Collection during the last four months of your Use Year. With a Use Year of June, that means that you cannot book and travel on those vacations after January.

You can travel on one of those collections during those four months, just that it must be booked during the first 8 months of your Use Year. If you wanted to take a Disney Cruise Line vacation this spring, you have until January 31, 2015 to book that vacation.  It can be helpful to remember that the last day to bank points is also the last day to book a vacation with one of those collections. You may still book and travel during the last four months of your use year at a Disney Vacation Club Resort if availability allows.

I thought your question about wanting to use points from an upcoming Use Year was an excellent one, and I actually spoke to a Disney Cruise Line Specialist at Member Services to find out the answer. Unfortunately, the Use Year that the points originate from does not change the Rule of Four since you would essentially be pulling those points into the current Use Year. You still cannot book and travel during that four month period of time.

You do still have some time before the end of this month if you were interested in booking a vacation or banking your points. If you would like to book a Disney Cruise Line vacation, call Member Services. Banking points can be done by calling Member Services or online at DVCMember.com.

    Happy planning!
