Hi! Would it be a wise choice to use our own vehicle to get around instead of bus transportation? Staying at POR in Sept-first WDW trip! 7days -no park hopper. Thanks!

    Hi Brenda,

Deciding whether your family would like to use your own vehicle to get around during your upcoming Disney trip is really a personal decision depending on many factors.  When my son was very young, we always rented a car because I feared he might not have much tolerance for bus rides back to the resort after a long day in the theme parks.  If he was going to have a meltdown, I preferred that he do so from the privacy of our own car.  We also wanted to have quick and easy access to restaurants at other Disney resorts without having to transfer buses or boats.

However, now that my son is a tween (and that rental car rates are much higher) we rely almost exclusively on complimentary Disney transportation.  We enjoy the fun atmosphere of the monorails, boats, and buses.  In recent years, we only rent cars if we are staying over at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort or Disney's Old Key West Resort.  These resorts are so spread out that we find having our own vehicle handy while staying there.

If I were you, I'd definitely take the Disney buses to the Magic Kingdom as the drop-off point is much closer to the front gates than the general parking area.  To reach the other theme parks, the decision is really up to you.  If you plan to stay until park closing and want a quick way back to your resort, then drive your own vehicle.  After all, as a Disney resort guest you enjoy free parking at all the Disney theme parks.  If, however, you fear you might be too tired at the end of the day to drive safely, then complimentary Disney transportation is a fabulous, air-conditioned option.  I say experiment with your transportation options.  That's the best way to find what works best for your family.

Wishing you a magical vacation in September!
