We went to Disney YEARS ago and my youngest son was 11 months old. I have wonderful pictures of him with Mickey Mouse smiling. Now that he is 2 1/2 I am worried that he might be scared. Is there a way to hopefully make him feel at ease with characters?

Hi Elizabeth! Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel.

Planning a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort with  Pre-School Kids and Little Ones can be such an exciting time but it also can leave us mamas a little bit overwhelmed with trying to figure out the details. I have three little ones myself and I can tell you that each of my experiences with them have been a bit different. My oldest two kiddos couldn’t get enough hugs and high fives from Mickey Mouse and his friends and yet my youngest two would only take a picture with them if I was holding her.

I think the thing that tends to make kids so timid is that they think Mickey Mouse is SMALL when in fact he is much larger in real life! One of the things that I did to prepare my kids is purchased an old Singalong DVD called Disneyland Fun from Amazon. If memory serves me correctly it was under $10.00. Not only was it fun for my kids to learn all of the songs but they were able to see the Characters size in relation to other kids and adults. You also can talk to your son about Mickey Mouse being bigger than he is and reassure him that if he is scared it is ok. Lastly when you are in the Theme Parks take it slow. If at first your son is too shy to have his picture taken, maybe you can walk up and have yours taken with the character. This shows your son that he isn’t a threat! We also were very patient with my youngest. After watching us and her siblings interact with the characters towards the end of the trip she wasn’t afraid anymore to walk up to Doc McStuffins and hold her hand!

Whatever you do just remember to take it slow and stop to really soak in all of that Disney magic! Have an Unforgettable time!
