is the week after the 4th of July better than the week leading up to the 4th? Do the crowds make the experience not enjoyable? My son's birthday is on July 4th and I would rather him be enjoying himself than be miserable trying to see the fireworks.

I have actually been on the Fourth of July, and although it was crowded, it was not horrible.  When you are talking summer time at Disney, you are talking crowds but they always seem manageable to me.  We selected Magic Kingdom as our park for the holiday and the day was truly not that crowded.  People arrived in late afternoon / early evening for the specific reason of watching the fireworks but were not there for the majority of the day.  I think your son will have no problem viewing the fireworks because they pop all over the park on the 4th, and they are quite spectacular.  What a way to celebrate his big day!  From my own personal experience I did find that the crowds seemed to die down after the 4th but I can not guarantee that will be the case in '09.  No matter which week you choose, I hope you and your family have a wonderful time at Walt Disney World.
