Hello. I am going to WDW in about 2 weeks.I have been many times, but this trip will be different. You see, I just tore my ACL Monday and will be having this afternoon. I do not want to cancel my trip, but do not se how I can enjoy my trip on crouches?

    Hi Jessica,

I'm sorry to hear about your recent injury. Unfortunately, I had a very similar experience. In November, my 17 year old son tore 4 out of the 5 tendons and ligaments that held his knee together right off the bone. This required emergency surgery 2 weeks before our Disney vacation.

The first thing that you need to do is make reservations for a electric scooter. We chose Apple Scooter because they had great rates on a 4 wheeled scooter. You'll definitely want one of those for the stability, as tipping over could be very dangerous for a recovering knee. This scooter made a huge difference for my son. The rest of us took turns carrying his crutches so that he could use them when dining or getting in line for an attraction. Some rides have "disabled access" lines and others do not. For example, to ride Toy Story Midway Mania, we had to get into the handicap line to avoid climbing a lot of stairs which is very tiring when you are recovering from surgery. That attraction has a special line, but not all do. You can stop by Guest Relations and ask them for a list of which attractions have a special entrance. We had his doctor's blessing to travel, but we had to dial back on which rides he could go on. Anything that was really jerky or bumpy was out (which eliminated roller coasters and thrill rides). He was able to enjoy Soarin' though.

Take your pain medication regularly and allow yourself a lot of rest breaks. Do not overdo it! Yes, your trip WILL be different than what you are used to. However, you'll be forced to slow down and you may find that you enjoy things that you don't normally take the time to explore. Watch more shows, browse the shops, eat lots of ice cream and search for Hidden Mickey's. You'll still have a wonderful vacation, it will just be different.

I'm out of room, but please send a follow-up question if I can help further.

Best of luck with your recovery,
