Mom And Son On Run

Going to WDW in March 09 with my husband, 3 sons (ages 5, 4, and 1.5) and parents for the 1st time. Staying at PO-Riverside with Deluxe Dining Plan. Need to make reservations soon. What do you recommend for character dining? Was thinking 3 or 4 max.

On the Moms Panel, there are mixed opinions on the number of table service meals that are appropriate for a first time guest. Bret answers a similar question with a less-is-more point of view HERE.

While I do agree with Bret about the benefits of a mid-day break, I'm going to take the opposite approach and advocate for lots of character dining. Of course every family is different, but when my girls were preschool age they lived for the characters. They liked the Winnie the Pooh ride, but they LOVED Winnie the Pooh. On some of our early trips to WDW we spent significantly more time looking for and meeting characters than we did on the rides -- because that's what most interested the kids. We found that character meals were a perfect way to indulge our kids' obsession with the characters. We knew that characters would be there, we didn't have to wait in a long line, we were in an air-conditioned environment. Everything was perfect for us. Having a character meal every day made our girls beyond happy.

So, you should check in with your kids. If they love meeting and interacting with the characters, then by all means schedule as many as possible. If that seems too much to you, then just go for one or two. The choice is really up to you.
