We are going to WDW in Dec 2011 and are debating staying on property. We've heard stories of not being able to ride the bus when we want to get on. I also worry about going to Downtown Disney and leaving there when we want to. Is transportation that bad?

    HI Tawn!

I have stayed off property a handful of times and I can honestly tell you that nothing compares to staying onsite!  There are so many great promotions going on right now and you may find that staying on property is usually a much better value than staying off site.  Not only are you immersed in the magic 24 hours a day, but you also have the option to purchase the dining plan, participate in Extra Magic Hours and take advantage of Disney's Magical Express airport transfer.  OK, sorry for the overkill, I just LOVE staying right smack in the middle of the magic!!!

We typically drive to Disney and I can honestly tell you that we NEVER use our vehicle!  We typically park it on our arrival day and don't see it again until the day we check out.  No, the transportation system is not perfect, but we find it to be the most convenient option!  For example, if you drive to the Magic Kingdom, you must first park your car, then hop on the tram to the Ticket and Transportation Center.  At this point, you must either take the monorail or a boat to the Magic Kingdom - hardly convenient!  On the other hand, the Disney bus will drop you directly at the entrance!

You mentioned being specifically worried about Downtown Disney.  While you may wait a while for a bus, I still find it to be super easy and much simpler than trying to find a parking spot!  I wholeheartedly recommend staying on Disney property and using the free transportation - have fun!
