    I will be visiting next week with my 5 year old. Do any of you have any money saving tips, tips on how to dress, or any other helpful tips for a single traveling mother? Can you take a backpack in the parks, and if so, what is allowed in? food, drinks, ?

    Hi Jennifer,

    5 is a great age to visit the parks!

    You can save $ by taking your own food & drinks in the parks. There are a couple of exceptions to this - no glass containers & no alcoholic beverages. You can bring a cooler in as long as it is not larger than 24" long x 15" wide x 18" high. Backpacks are allowed & I find them very handy. Bring Ziploc baggies to have on hand in case you have some leftover carrots, grapes or other non-perishables from a meal to save to snack on later. Refill water bottles at water fountains. Split a meal or order just a burger instead of the combo meal. Purchase glow in the dark / light up toys before your trip (cheaper than buying in the parks). Dress in light colored comfortable shorts & shirts made breathable materials. Some parents are big fans of Crocs but I prefer sneakers to protect little feet boarding attractions.

    Measure your son's height & review the list of attractions with height requirements to avoid disappointment once you reach the parks - click here.

    Here are some tips to beat the heat:
    * Go early - you'll miss the huge crowds & it will be a little cooler
    * Buy a Frogg Togg (available at most sporting goods stores) to keep around your neck/head - cut in 1/2 to get double the use.
    * Buy a misty fan - available in the parks if you don't already have one.
    * Take a hand held or clip on fan - be sure to bring extra batteries.
    * Use a visor instead of a hat.
    * Visit attractions that keep you inside longer (let me know which parks you're visiting if you'd like suggestions).
    * Don't forget sunscreen.

    I am out of room for this answer - let me know if you need further suggestions. Wishing you many magical memories :-) Allison
