Using DAS w/our son. If he gets to the ride boarding area and is too scared to ride, can we rider switch at that point? Can Dad stay w/son while mom still boards w/daughters? Did this on Space Mountain but not with DAS, and an older child waited at exit.

Hi, Kracinda!  Thanks for bringing your question to the Disney Parks Moms Panel.

My son has autism, and one thing that I have discovered while vacationing with him is that the Cast Members at the Walt Disney World Resort always go above and beyond to ensure that ALL guests have a magical experience.  We utilize Disability Access Service (DAS) when we visit the Walt Disney World theme parks with my son, and we have found it to be so helpful in keeping his stress-level under control.

Although my son can be overwhelmed by crowds and long waits, we are lucky in that he is very brave about experiencing even the most thrilling attractions.  During our last vacation, he rode Avatar Flight of Passage for the first time and was grinning ear to ear the entire time.  However, there are lots of kiddos who cannot experience certain attractions due to height restrictions, and sometimes they would just prefer to skip certain attractions.  The Rider Switch Service comes in handy in these type of situations.  By using Rider Switch, everyone in your travel party who wishes to experience an attraction may do so, even if you have little Mouseketeers in your group who are unable or unwilling to ride.

If you know for sure that your son wants to skip an attraction, you can talk to a Cast Member at that particular attraction about using the Rider Switch Service.  However, if your son says he wants to ride, but you think he may change his mind at the boarding area, you may want to ask the Cast Members about this when you approach them to obtain a ride return time using his Disability Access Service pass.  Don't worry, your son will not be the first or the last kiddo to change his mind about an attraction at the last minute.  The Cast Members will have a procedure in place for helping guests in this situation.  However, these procedures may vary from attraction to attraction, so it is best to consult with the Cast Members at the specific attraction you are concerned about to see how you should proceed.
