Trying to work out our budget for our Disney World October 2013 trip. for a family of 3. (our son is 6) What are some unexpected expenses I might not think about? This is our first trip to the world :)

    Hi Amy!
What a great adventure you have coming up this fall!! Seeing Walt Disney World for the first time will be amazing, and seeing it through your child's eyes for the first time makes it even more so!
There really aren't any truly unexpected expenses that should trip you up. To begin with, you have your flight or travel expenses, then lodging, food and park tickets. Those four items should be the majority of your trip's expenses and are known in advance.
Now as far as incidentals go, you will want to budget for snacks/treats during each day and the obligatory souvenirs for you, your son and any folks back home that you wish to spoil.
Beyond the basics of my trips, I always budget $100 a day for what my grandfather used to call "walking around money." It doesn't mean you have to spend $100 a day, just have it with you. Some days, you may only spend $30 on a few bottled waters and snacks and then the next day you may splurge for that Little Mermaid sweatshirt that you've always wanted for $50, etc. So, a good rule of thumb at my house is $100/day of the trip beyond flight, meals, lodging and park tickets.
I hope this helps and I wish you a Magical, Memorable first trip!! :)
