    Ann Asked

In trying to calm my 2 year old's fear, my mother told my 2 & 4 yr olds that Mickey is a person dressed up. We leave for Disney in 4 days and I don't know how to convince my 4 yr old that Mickey is real. He was so excited to meet him before this happen

    Hi, Ann!

It's rough when the children are at those different developmental stages. But this situation, while challenging, is not at all rare, and it can certainly be dealt with.

I heard a Cast Member engage in the following conversation with a young Guest:

"Who's in the Mickey suit?" asked the child. Without missing a beat, the Cast Member responded, "Who's in your suit?"

That reply absolutely stumped the little one.

Maybe the thing to do is to quietly pull your four-year-old aside and tell him that Mickey Mouse is as real as he is! If Mickey wasn't real, would your son be able to meet him, hug him, get his autograph? I'd focus less on the "suit" part and more on the fact that Mickey is a living, breathing character (regardless of who is "in the suit"). And if your boy does ask "Who's in the suit?", you can give that same answer :)

I have a sneaking suspicion, though, that once you all are immersed in the Magic of Disney, all of those doubts will fall away, and all he'll want to do is run into Mickey Mouse's arms. What is more real than that?

    See you later, celebrator!
