We are traveling in one week on the Disney Dream with my two children, 4 and 6. Both my children have food intolerances and severe allergies. I am concerned about how they handle this in the kids club.

    Hi, Suzanne!

Congratulations on your upcoming cruise aboard the Disney Dream!

I completely understand your concern as a mother for the care of your children when you're not around, and I've taken some extra steps (and a little time) to make sure that I was giving you the most accurate and up-to-date information.

I heard from the Youth Activities Management of Disney Cruise Line (DCL), and they said that many children sailing with DCL have special dietary requirements. Upon registration, you will be asked about medical conditions or dietary restrictions. The counselors will ask for thorough explanations and depending on the severity of the condition, they will make announcements to the entire youth staff at the beginning of the cruise during the team meeting to ensure all are aware. If Epi-pens are applicable, please note that they can keep the child’s Epi-pen in the space while the child is in care, and all counselors are trained in Epi-pen administering.

In addition, the youth clubs offer meals and cooking programs in their spaces, and there is a possibility that some of the food or ingredients used may be something that a child is allergic to. Depending on the severity, they may adjust the food service to not include that particular ingredient for the cruise. The counselors follow strict protocol before serving any food items and regularly reference the information received during the initial youth registration to ensure no trigger foods are served to children.

During meal times, children with allergies are served safe foods first and are under the watchful eye of the trained counselors. The computer systems, combined with Mickey Bands which the children wear, alert counselors to dietary needs should they be in the space when food is served or used.

I hope this careful attention to detail relieves your concerns. Have a stress-free trip and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
