We are traveling to Disney World this December and our baby will be 14 months old when we go. Do you buy a plane ticket for a 1 year old? Should you bring your own stroller or rent one? Car seat for magical express?

    Katie,

    Thanks for your questions!

So my kids are older now, but I remember traveling with them when they were young. These were big decisions!

Most airlines do not require you to purchase a ticket for a child under two, though of course that means they won't have a seat of their own. They will have to remain on your lap during the flight. Sometimes we were lucky to get an empty seat between us, but I have not seen a lot of those on flights lately so plan that you won't get one. No matter what, check with your airline to confirm this policy before your purchase.

As for a stroller, we opted to take our own rather than rent one from Disney. The Disney Stroller Rentals are nice, but we also liked having a stroller when we were not in the parks. This meant that the kids had somewhere to sit when we were in the airport, and when we were going to and from the parks.

Quick tip: Whether you bring a stroller or rent one, tie some vivid, unique ribbon or other similar item so it is easy to find it in the sea of parked strollers when you get off of a ride.

Concerning a car seat, the Disney's Magical Express bus does not have child seats, but just like with the flights I would count on holding them on your lap during the approximately 30 minute ride. It is a comfortable ride, much like on the airline.

Make sure you take advantage of many of the great supporting programs for traveling with a little one. The in-park Baby Care Centers are a great place to go with a baby for feedings, for a quick diaper change, or to get out of the midday sun for a bit. Before you leave you can reference the Planning for Preschool Kids & Little Ones page, which connects you to lots of great planning ideas. They even can send you a Preschool Parents' Guide
