Thinking of visiting in late December and we have about an 8 hour drive. Just wondering if we arrived the first day shortly after lunch or early afternoon say around 3 or 4 pm and wanted to go the Magic Kingdom, would we have to pay full admission price

Yes, WDW does not offer any "twilight" ticket incentives that you may find at your local amusement parks. Once you enter a theme park turnstile using your Magic Your Way ticket, one park day will be deducted from your pass. Of course, you can leave and return to that same park in a single day and still have it only count as one day. With a park hopper, you can leave the park you began in and hop to another park using only a single day worth of admission.

On arrival day, I suggest taking advantage of your resort's amenities. I also recommend dining at one of the resort  hotels. Dinner at Chef Mickey's is a fun first night activity. You could visit Downtown Disney as well. Or take in a dinner show such as the Hoop-Dee-Doo at Ft. Wilderness Resort and Campground.

After a long travel day, I would go to a park on your first full day at WDW.
