Hi there!! I am taking my 6 and 4 year old boys to Disney for their first time from July 28th thru Aug 2nd. It's a surprise and they have no idea!! Does anyone have any pointers for me on how to make a smooth trip with two boys on my own??

    Hi Amanda,

Welcome to the Moms Panel! I did two solo trips last year, and in my experience, it was much easier than I ever imagined it would be.

I approached the trip with the expectation that we would go at their pace, and it worked wonders. Here are a few other things I suggest:

Communicate - Once the cat is out of the bag, it's time for a frank discussion on how you are expecting them to behave. It's important to stress that they will have to take into account the needs/wants of all three of you - and that it's all about a little give and take.  Also be sure to discuss the importance of sticking together, and what to do in the event that you get separated. I tell my children to ask a cast member with a name tag for assistance, or another "Mom". It is also helpful to have some identification on the children (shoe tags, wrist bands, temporary tattoos) with your cell phone number (don't make the personal information plainly visable, but have it available somewhere on your child).

Get up early! - July is an extremely hot and humid time of year in Orlando, so don't be afraid to get up early and head to the parks so you can head back to the pool in the heat of the day. On the flip side don't be afraid to go back to the parks in the evenings once the sun has set.

Stay hydrated and snack well - In my experience with the little ones - melt downs are typically a result of overheating or hunger/thirst. Be sure to keep plenty of water with you and take advantage of the healthy snacks available in all of the parks. It's even work packing some easily portable snacks such as granola bars, crackers, raisins, cereal bars etc.
