Mom And Daughter Resort Room

We are taking our daughters 5 and 7 to Disney in September. We are staying at the Polynesian Resort and arrive on the late (8:30 pm) on the 28th. Does it make sense to stay in another hotel for the evening of the 28th something more cost effective?

Hi Carolyn! I'm always looking for ways to save money on my Disney vacations, so I have done exactly what you're considering. When we arrive at Walt Disney World in the evening, I sometimes stay at a value or moderate resort the first night and then move to the deluxe resort the next morning. You can save a few hundred dollars by doing that, and it can make sense if you're not arriving at the deluxe resort early enough to enjoy all of the amenities. Disney will transfer your luggage from the first resort to second one, so it's fairly easy to switch resorts.

Of course, the downside is that you won't be able to unpack and get set up in your room the first night, and you'll have to spend time the next day checking into another resort. (You'll need two separate reservations: one for each hotel.) If you've purchased a package with park tickets and the Dining Plan, you won't be able to get your tickets and dining credits until you check into the second resort the next morning. If you are using the Dining Plan, you may not want to split your stay between resorts since you'll lose one day of meal credits. (It's not generally cost-effective to purchase a one-night package with the Dining Plan, so your first night reservation would be room-only.)

While I enjoy splitting my Disney vacations between multiple resorts, it often feels more relaxing when I only have to unpack and check in once. Whether that extra bit of relaxation is worth a few hundred dollars is a personal decision, but I think it's definitely cost-effective if you don't mind the slight hassle of moving.
