We are surprising my 6yr old son with a visit to Disney World for Christmas. He has ADHD and secondary anxiety issues. Just looking for some wisdom and assurance that this will not stress him out too much?

    Hi Pamela,

I can only imagine the excitement around your house this Christmas as you surprise your son with a vacation to the most magical place on earth! SO FUN!

As the mama of one child with autism and another one who can become quite anxious, especially when we experience something new, I completely understand your concern. I'm happy to let you know, though, that my family has found the Walt Disney World Resort to be a magical vacation destination for everyone. With a few tools in your tool box and some realistic expectations, I'm confident that your family will have an amazing time.

First, I'd encourage you to watch some of the wonderful online planning videos before you go to help familiarize him with all the things he'll see and do. Just imagine the joy on his face when he gets to experience that much anticipated attraction for the first time! When you're packing, I'd encourage you to bring along some things from home that may be comforting to him. We've brought small stuffed animals, blankets, sensory toys, squishy toys, headphones, and even favorite music with us to help our kiddos calm down if they're feeling overwhelmed. Once you arrive, a visit to Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom Park or The Boneyard at Disney's Animal Kingdom are great places to him kids run around a bit if he needs to get some wiggles out. Don't be afraid to slow down and take some breaks, too. Heading back to your Disney Resort hotel room for a bit or even just slowing down to enjoy a delicious meal or snack can be a great way to recharge. Lastly, Cast Members are amazing resources, and they're there to help make sure everyone is having a great time. If he's struggling, I'd encourage you to stop in at Guest Relations and ask about resources that could help.

Thanks so much for visiting us at the Disney Parks Moms Panel, Pamela, and have a truly magical vacation with your Mouseketeer!
