We are staying at Old Key West in August, 8 people. I have seen reviews that mention very long bus rides. A Mom's Panel response from 2008 stated that OKW has its own bus and doesn't share it so the rides are not long. Is this still true?

    Hi Christiane!

Thanks for stopping by the Disney Parks Moms Panel! Disney’s Old Key West Resort is a great choice for a party of 8, as the rooms are some of the largest on property. My family enjoyed our stay there, and we are fans of Disney’s complimentary resort transportation system.

In my experience, the phrase “a long bus ride” is really a subjective matter. What I may consider a reasonable length bus ride, may seem like a long ride to another Guest. As someone who has lived in major cities and relied on public transportation to get to work and school, I feel the Disney bus system is generally efficient and works well for my family. Since at home I drive four kids around town in my own bus, “Minnie” my minivan, on vacation I prefer to let Mickey (or at least his awesome bus drivers) chauffeur me around the property.

The buses at Disney’s Old Key West are not shared with any other resort. The resort is large however, and there are 5 bus stops within the resort. If your room is located near the first stop, you will need to visit four additional stops before you leave the resort property. On the plus side, you will be the first group to disembark on your return! To minimize time spent waiting on a bus, I have a few recommendations. Traveling at peak times may mean you might need to stand. This makes any ride seem longer. I find that mid-morning rides to the theme parks, and post firework or parade crowds leaving the parks tend to be the most crowded. I also recommend a positive outlook on the experience. Especially with an August vacation, I much prefer to wait in a shaded bus stop for a cool and refreshingly air conditioned complimentary bus, than drive myself in my sweltering hot rental car.

I hope this information is helpful for you. Let me know what other questions you have, as I love helping my fellow Guests plan their magical vacations!

    Have a Disney Day!
