I am starting to plan our first family trip for 4 adults and 2 children to Walt Disney World in August of 2014, but I do not know where to begin. I want to make sure my family has the best time possible, especially the children. HELP!! :) Thank You.

Hello Lisa!  Welcome to the Disney Parks Mom´s Panel.

Congratulations on your family´s first Walt Disney World vacation.  Prepare to enjoy a magical family experience like no other, especially for the children.

Planning a year before your vacation is a perfect way to start, having lots of time to get familiar with all the new experiences your family will share.

First is when to visit.  This looks to be covered, but if there is some flexibility I suggest visiting late August, closer to September.  The difference in crowd level might be of your liking.  For more information on Disney crowd levels I use touringplans.com.

Second is choosing your hotel.  All Disney resorts feature great rooms, service and location.  Still, if budget allows Moderate and Deluxe resorts feature extra benefits that appeal to different guests.

Besides size and comfort, I always look for location regarding the parks I will be visiting the most.  In this regard Disney Deluxe Resorts are my first choice.
From the Polynesian Resort guest can ride the Monorail or just walk to the Transportation & Ticket Center in less than five minutes.
From the Contemporary Resort guest can walk in less than 20 minutes to the Magic Kingdom, or ride the Monorail.  While form the Yacht Club Resort, both Epcot and Hollywood Studios are within a 20 minute walk or boat ride.

Deluxe Resorts feature most Character and Signature Dining experiences.  For dining experiences it is recommended to make Advance Dining Reservations around 180 days in advance.

Glad to help you plan a magical Disney vacation.
