My son, 23 months, was diagnosed with autism spectrum today! We thought it was possible, but in denial...I guess. I'm not sure what to do!!! We have a trip scheduled in 2 weeks for 10 nights, should we cancel? Will it be too much for him? I'm nervous!

    Hi, Hollie!

As a mom (14 years) and an educator (20 years) I can understand your sudden concern about your upcoming trip to Walt Disney World.  However, do not worryAll will be well!

Think of it this way; you know your son. You've known his tendencies, interests and abilities for as long as he has graced this Earth with his presence. A diagnosis simply gives a name to what you've seen all along, so there is nothing new to worry about. You got this.

Of all the places in the world that you can travel with your son, Walt Disney World is the one that will offer many options for Guests with needs of all kinds. Before you go, try to determine what, if anything, triggers behaviors in your son that make you think he's not happy, or may be frustrated in some way. You probably already avoid these situations, if that's the case. Send me a question which details what you know has been a problem in the past; I'll detail how to get around such circumstances in my answer.

Talk with your doctor about things which might be difficult for your son, then have your doctor write a note specifying what your son will need while in WDW. Present this note to a Cast Member at Guest Services at any of the four theme parks or at Downtown Disney to receive a Guest Assistance Card, which will enable you and your son, if need be, to travel throughout WDW while avoiding anything that you know may be too difficult for his abilities.

All will be well, Hollie! You know how to help your son enjoy a wonderful day, regardless of what you learned today. Focus on the boy you know, do a little reading if you feel that you need to know more, but most importantly, enjoy your time with your little prince.

Send more questions, Hollie! I know you have them, and I'd love to help!
