My son & I will be going to disney world next year when he is 4. I would like at least 4 character meals, my question is would the dining plan be worth getting for just the 2 of us or would out of pocket be better? How much is a normal child's dining p

    Hi Kaitlyn,

Whether or not the Disney Dining Plan is a value for you will really depend on where you anticipate dining each day. For our family, we love taking advantage of the plan because we enjoy all-you-care-to-eat meals as well as Character Dining Experiences. From your initial question, it sounds like you plan to do the same. Although prices will depend on the season, the 2013 prices were around $57 for guests age 10+ and around $19 for guests age 3-9, per night. Each year the prices have increased a few dollars, so I'd budget around $60 and $20 per night for 2014. Although subject to change, the Magic Your Way plus Dining plan currently includes one table service or buffet meal, one quick service meal, a snack and a Resort refillable mug. It does not, however, cover gratuity. We are not a family that normally orders desserts, so the ability to have a dessert included in many of the Disney Dining Plan locations is a special treat for us, and a value.

Take a look at the current menu prices offered on the independent site allears.net to determine what you may spend out of pocket without the Disney Dining Plan. Disney Junior Plan 'n Dine at Disney's Hollywood Studios, for example, would cost you both around $65 for lunch out of pocket (including gratuity) whereas the Disney Dining Plan would've cost you around $85 to include this meal (with gratuity), a quick service meal, a snack, and unlimited trips to the beverage stations at your Resort Hotel per night.

To save on breakfast costs, our family will have yogurt, bananas, or granola in our room as a "grab and go" style meal on the way to the bus stop. The Disney Dining Plan has worked great for us, but the cost analysis will determine if it's a value for you as well.

I'm happy to answer any other questions you may have, Kaitlyn, and thank you for visiting us at the Disney Parks Moms Panel.

    Happy Planning!
