My son has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder - Level 1. I am not sure what to do or to expect from Disney when it comes to guests with this type of disability. What do i need to do to make this trip better or easier on him?

Howdy Eric! Thanks so much for your question as I know others may need similar information.

Your vacation to Walt Disney World will be a magical. You may just want to take a few extra steps to ensure your son has what he needs to be comfortable throughout your vacation. As you know, Walt Disney World Resort can be very stimulating for any child. While on vacation, try to keep an eye out for his triggers and avoid them when possible. You might also want to have reinforcers on hand to reward his behavior when appropriate.

You might also consider the following:

    1. Contact Disney Reservations at (407) 939-1936 and ask them to make a note about your son's diagnosis on your reservation. Request a room that will best accommodate you (quiet area, etc.). When you are 10 days from your check-in date, contact your Resort hotel directly and ensure your request is noted. The Cast Members that take care of the room assignments will do their best to accommodate you.

    2. When you visit the Theme Parks, visit Guest Relations (located near the front of each Theme Park) and request a Guest Assistance Card. Visit with a Guest Relations Cast Member and explain your son's situation. You will receive a Guest Assistance Card that is stamped appropriately. This service is designed to alert Cast Members about Guests who may need additional assistance. As needed and appropriate, Guests may be offered an alternative waiting area based on the attraction.

I think the most important thing for anyone traveling to Walt Disney World with children (regardless of a disability) to do is to have a plan but allow for flexibility when needed. Take a deep breath and enjoy each moment knowing that magical memories are being made that you will cherish for a lifetime.

I'm sending happy pixie dusted thoughts your way as you plan your vacation. Please let me know if you need any further information and enjoy every minute of your magical Disney vacation!
