My sister and I are planning a trip to WDW in August 08. We were wondering what the best resort is to stay at if we want to be the closest to MK and/or Epcot (or the resort that has the easiest transportation system to the majority of the activities)?

For proximity to the Magic Kingdom, you can’t beat the convenience of the monorail resort hotels. Your choices are the Grand Floridian, Contemporary and Polynesian. These resorts all reach Epcot via the resort monorail to the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC), where you will then transfer to the Epcot monorail.

From the Grand Floridian (GF), the Magic Kingdom is the first stop via monorail. There is also transportation via boat and when returning  from the Magic Kingdom, the GF is the first stop,.

From the Contemporary, you can actually walk to the Magic Kingdom. It’s a short stroll and is even quicker than the monorail. The monorail loop runs from the Contemporary to the Transportation and Ticket Center, Polynesian and Grand Floridian before looping back to the Contemporary resort.

From the Polynesian, it is a quick monorail or boat ride to and from the Magic Kingdom. Accessing Epcot is also simple. You can monorail to the Transportation and Ticket Center and transfer to the Epcot monorail. Better yet, walk to the TTC and hop directly on the Epcot monorail line. There is a nice path to the TTC just past the Rapa Nui longhouse building. I found this a very convenient way to travel to Epcot.

If you will be spending most of your time at Epcot, the Yacht and Beach Club would be my top choice. I found it so relaxing to be able to walk into Epcot via the International Gateway entrance. On mornings that we were headed to Future World, the walk through World Showcase was beautiful and peaceful. A big timesaver was being able to exit after Illuminations through the International Gateway. I loved avoiding the crowds at the front entrance and returning to the hotel quickly at the end of the day.

The Boardwalk accommodations are also close to Epcot.

The above resorts are all deluxe hotels with deluxe prices. The Wilderness Lodge has convenient boat transportation to and from the Magic Kingdom at lower nightly rates than the other deluxe hotels.
