Should I set aside one full day each to visit Downtown Disney and the Boardwalk or can I combine both in one visit?

You could definitely combine these into one day, or even part of one day.

The Boardwalk area is fairly small. During the day you rent a surrey bike and cruise around the Epcot resorts area. In the evenings there are a few roving performers and small midway-style games. Also there are a few shops, but they are fairly small. The draw here would be the restaurants, such as the ESPN Zone, Spoodles, and the Flying Fish Cafe. Another reason to visit the Boardwalk would be dancing at the Atlantic Dance Hall or the sing-alongs at Jellyrolls. These two are really adults-only evening activities.

Downtown Disney is much larger and more bustling. There are probably 100 shops here, many of them quite large, dozens of restaurants, DisneyQuest, the AMC movie theater, and Cirque du Soleil. If you're a big shopper, you could likely spend a good long afternoon here. Or if you have arcade-loving kids, I'm sure they could burn quite a few hours at DisneyQuest. But I couldn't see devoting an entire day to even Downtown Disney.

I think you'll be fine to budget one day to these two areas, and you may even have some time left over.
