I've seen a "wave" phone mentioned in several questions/answers about the Disney cruise ships. What exactly is a "wave" phone and what is it for? Thanks so much!

    Hey, Lisa!

Each stateroom aboard every Disney ship comes equipped with two Wave Phones (and chargers).  They are phones which can be used throughout the ship as well as short distances away from the ship. You can contact other passengers and crew members using your wave phone, other stateroom phones or areas of the ship -- including Guest Services and the Youth Activities spaces. You can also leave voice messages and text messages on wave phones.

Use of the wave phones is complimentary, but there is a hefty fine if one is lost or damaged. Therefore, you'll want to use discernment when deciding who in your traveling party gets to carry one around. We have six people in our family, and usually book two staterooms. So, we have four wave phones to distribute amongst the group. We typically limit it to Mom, Dad and the two teenagers since they usually have "free reign" of the ship. Our younger two children are either in the presence of a parent or older sibling or checked into a Youth Club.

You can bring walkie-talkies on board to stay in contact with members of your group, but the reception is sometimes sketchy. Plus, they can be quite annoying in quiet areas or in tight spaces like elevators. We usually bring along a white board to post on our stateroom doors (in addition to keeping the wave phones with us). You never know when someone's wave phone might need charging or when someone is in a place where they can't answer. Therefore, at least checking in with each other on the white board and deciding on periodic meeting places/times are great ways to keep track of your family while on board.
