It seems cheaper to stay off grounds, ( exp: some hotels have free breakfast ) and for 5 adults and 4 kids that helps, also found a moderate for $100.00 a night, what are the pros and cons to staying on and off site?

As you said, the pros to staying off site are the lower price of rooms, and the possibility of having a continental breakfast included.  Also you may eat more meals off property, which usually saves money.

The biggest con for us was the travel time.  We visited once in mid-June and stayed only a few miles away, yet it took about 45 minutes to get from our front door to the parking lot.  Lots of traffic!  We also really missed that complete immersion in the Disney magic; the resorts are incredibly themed.  And Extra Magic Hours and the Disney Dining Plan are great perks available only to Disney resort guests.

A couple of things to consider:

    • Transportation.  Unless you are driving to Disney, you'll have to factor in the cost of a rental car or taxis.  It's possible to find a hotel that offers transportation to Disney, but then you'll be at the mercy of their schedule, not your own.  Make sure that's ok with you.

Breakfast.  You may be able to get continental breakfast included if you stay off site.  If you stay on-property, make your own!  We usually have things like fruit, granola bars, pop tarts, yogurt, cereal, pastries, etc in our room.  You can take this with you, use a grocery delivery service, or purchase in the resort gift shop. Refrigerators are included in moderate and deluxe accommodations, and available for a small rental fee in value resorts.

For us, staying off site once was enough to know that we wouldn't want to do it again, and it played a huge part in our decision to purchase the Disney Vacation Club.  For others, spending the day in a Disney park is enough, and they'd like a place to retire that isn't part of that world.  Whichever way you do it you'll still be in Disney, and that is always a wonderful thing!
