I saw where a mom asked U a question re. The Animal Kingdom,& The Shades of Green. My family & I are going to Disney this Jan.And, this will be our 1st time staying @ either. We have been many times, but only @ Contemporary.will there be a BIG differe

Unfortunately the word limit cut your question short Gwen, but I'll do my best to give you the advice you were looking for. I gather that you are wanting to know the differences between a stay at a Disney resort (ie. the Contemporary) and the Shades of Green.

Let me assure you that a stay at Shades of Green is not something to hang your head over. Shades of Green truly is a beautiful property with gorgeous grounds, spacious rooms, and the convenience of on-site dining. It also offers a great value for eligible guests and often times the money you save on accommodations is money that can be put towards other aspects of your trip!

All that said, my first choice would always be to stay in a moderate or deluxe Disney resort. Shades of Green is operated by the military and you can certainly pick up on that during your stay there. There is just something not-so-magical about being asked for your military ID, or sponsor's "last 4" upon check-in. When we vacation, we want to leave that part of reality behind us and it's difficult to do that when you are surrounded by strictly military guests and lingo. On the contrary, Disney resorts offer the utmost attention to theming and details, resulting in more magical stays. An example of this is how, when checking in at the Fort Wilderness cabins for instance, they greet you with a friendly "howdy!"  It's all in the details.

However, there are ways to minimize the differences. Were my family to stay at Shades of Green again, we would plan for fewer "down days" at the resort. We'd plus up our schedule with theme park, and water park days. By doing so, we'd legitimately compartmentalize our resort as a place to rest our heads, rather than a place to explore and relax. If you go in prepared for the differences, I think you'll better be able to appreciate the value of a stay at Shades of Green. And really, considering that you will be at WDW--mere miles from the Magic Kingdom--how bad can it be? ;)
