we are sailing on a four day cruise from miami, and returning to miami, do we need a passport or will a birth certificate and licence work?

Welcome aboard, Barb! Isn't it so exciting to begin planning your Disney Cruise Line voyage? Since you're setting sail from Miami on a four night adventure, that means that you'll be enjoying the beautiful Disney Magic. The Magic is one of my favorite of all four Disney ships. I love the two smaller classic ships for their uniqueness and intimacy. You're really in for an amazing experience!

Guests sailing with Disney Cruise Line who are U.S. citizens, sailing on a round trip cruise to and from a U.S. port of call, like Miami, do not necessarily need passports for their trip. Please read further about the details on the Travel Documents page of Disney Cruise Line's website and check with Disney directly if you have specific questions based a different circumstance. You can travel this type of itinerary in most cases with simply your state-issued (not hospital-issued) birth certificate and a government-issued I.D., like a driver's license. Children under 16 only need the birth certificate when traveling with their parents. Now, one way cruises from the U.S. ending in a different foreign port of call would require passports, so please read carefully the details.

I do highly recommend getting passports for everyone in the family if you have the time though. My family and I have always sailed with passports because I like the added security of knowing that even if we were to encounter an unexpected medical or other type of emergency in a foreign port of call, we can more easily fly home with our passports.

I hope that helps as you plan this cruise, Barb!
