Have rez for POR in Feb. Family of 5 kids age 11,8,5. Thinking of chg to Cabins or AS Fam Suite. Which do you prefer? Concern of crowd level on bus at AS or inconvenience of bus transportation at the cabins.

    Michelle:

Our family of six has stayed at both Port Orleans and Fort Wilderness and I have toured the All-Star Family Suites.  All three locations have their pros and cons.

Port Orleans is light on the pocketbook and offers the boat to Downtown Disney and a true resort feel.  Its downside is that there are multiple stops on the bus route and some of the trundle beds have very thin mattresses--although your 5-year-old probably won't notice a thing.  The biggest con is the fact that there is only a privacy curtain between the vanity area and the bedrooms and all sleep in the one room.  So once one goes to bed, we all need to hit the sack!

The family suites can erase several of Port Orleans' cons:  a private bedroom, TWO bathrooms, a microwave for making a few meals to help cover the upgrade in price and a living area to spread out.  The pull-out sofa, ottoman and chair have much thicker mattresses than the trundle.  If you're not going President's Day Weekend, you may be fine on the buses.

I've left the cabins for last because they're my preference.  The unique feel of the mini log cabins appeals to kids the age of yours that the motor-court ambiance of the All-Star's just doesn't match.  It offers a private bedroom with bunks and a double bed, a large living area with full kitchen and a Murphy bed.  It has only one bath, but it's very large and you don't have teens yet.  The deck outside and room to run around gives it a leg up, too, not to mention all the fort has to offer: Chip 'n' Dale's Campfire sing-along, boat rides to Magic Kingdom and the other Bay Lake resorts, a pool slide and simply a peaceful respite from the crowded parks.

Any way you go, you'll come out a winner.  Just decide what you value most and choose accordingly!

    Wishing you a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
