Recv'd conflicting reports. Is Aug 9-16 a good time to visit WDW? It's hot but more worried about crowds. Considering canceling trip due to 1-2 hr waits. Had reserv 3x's since 03 & canceled b/c of Army life. Family SO EXCITED! Hate to disappoint again

I researched this a bit for you and I, too, found conflicting reports so I understand your confusion.  The week in question sort of borders the time when most kids go back to school, but with so many different schedules across the country it's tough to predict exactly when those summer crowds will dissipate.  I have a friend in Florida whose children do not go back to school until Aug. 18th.  Local visitors can impact crowd levels so you can understand why the week you want to visit is so hard to predict.  What I can tell you is that Disney publishes a calendar that gives guests a good idea of the crowd levels they are expecting over the year.  They suggest great times to vacation based on projected crowd levels, pleasant weather, and low room rates.  In this case, they do recommend the week you are considering as a great time to vacation.  If you do decide to reschedule though, perhaps this calendar will be useful in helping you to choose another time in the future.
