Would you recommend renting a minivan for the week or will the bus system be adequate? We're staying at All Star Music and I'm worried we'll get stuck waiting somewhere and miss something important. Plus it'd be nice to run for groceries, etc...

Since you are asking the question, and you seem to be a bit concerned about this, I suspect you will be happier with a minivan instead of being 100% dependent on WDW transportation.

The last time we were at WDW we rented a minivan, we used it almost all of the time, and were very glad we had decided to rent it.  I can't say that it always saved us time (but I think it usually did), but I can say that it always was available for us immediately when we wanted to leave, and it never had to make any additional stops along the way to our destination. ;-)

Please be aware that there are many people out there that would disagree with me on this topic.  Lots of people love the WDW transportation system, and find it to be reliable and reasonably efficient.  Fans of it also love the fact that they don't have to drive while they are on vacation.

Our family, however, is much more a fan of renting a car, and we don't mind doing a little driving during vacation.  I think we place more value on having more control of our own transport schedule and the freedom/flexibility that having your own car/minivan provides (like going on a grocery run, etc.).  Sure, it costs a little more, but I guess to us time, and peace of mind, is even more valuable than the relatively small increment we have to pay for renting a car or minivan.
