We were recently at EPCOT and dined at The Coral Reef. Can you give me any information on the HUGE sea turtle that lives in the aquarium? if you don't see it move, it just looks like a statue! Thanks!!

    Hi Bonnie,

Seeing as I teach high school life science, I simply couldn't pass up your sea turtle question.  I wish I knew the name of that cool sea turtle in the enormous aquarium at The Seas with Nemo and Friends Pavilion.  One thing is for sure; he must be pretty old.  I think I remember spotting him once on a recent trip.  Although it's hard to be precise about a sea turtle's age, based on the growth rings on his carapace, he's no spring chicken.  Sea turtles, under perfect conditions, can live to be 80-years-old.  You also noticed that he wasn't moving very fast.  Well, he doesn't have to as there are no natural predators swimming in the tank with him.

I don't know any specifics about the turtle you ask about but I can tell you where to go to learn more about him or her.  Since Sea Base Alpha is a working marine research center, you can head to level two of the pavilion to find researchers who can tell you more about the amazing creatures who inhabit this spectacular environment.  Next time you're there, ask about your sea turtle friend.

And if you ever want to book a Disney adventure where you get to encounter sea turtles in the wild, book an Adventures by Disney excursion while staying as a guest at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.  When I was there for the resort's grand opening last fall, I kayaked on the windward side of Oahu and saw some "honu," or sea turtles during the adventure.  One swam right up to the kayak in front of me.  How cool!  That was an experience I will surely never forget.

Thanks for a fun and unique question!
