I have been reading many questions on this site. I have a stupid question - what is pin trading? I am going to WDW in October and I am not sure if I should do this with my 5 year old.

Hi Megan.  This is actually a great question and can be a whole lot of fun for your five-year old.   Here is Disney's link to how Pin Trading works.    Its really simple.   Once you purchase a set of pins, your child can begin trading these with any Disney Cast Member wearing pins throughout the park.  You will be surprised how many of the Cast Members participate.    You child will simply ask to see what pins they have and if he/she likes one, the Cast Member will trade.

If you are interested, I suggest that you purchase one of the starter sets available throughout the parks.    It will come with a lanyard to hold the pins and the starter set will have typically four pins.    After that your trading can begin.  One other suggestion -- make sure the pin backings remain fastened.   We happened to lose a few pins that way.

If you child enjoys it half as much as my son and daughter, I am sure you will find it worth the minimal investment to get going.   Hope this helps!
