My question is is it a good idea to charge what you buy to your room?

I think it's really a matter of personal preference.

During our last vacation, I charged almost 100% of our purchases (including meals) to our room.  For me, it is a very convenient method because I don't have to carry a bulky wallet and risk losing it in the parks.  Nearly all of the shops and restaurants accept a room key for payment but there are a few that do not so you'll want to keep that in mind.

On the other hand, if you are not a disciplined spender, charging purchases to your room could leave you with a much larger than expected bill at the end of your stay.  Paying more than you planned for would really not be a pleasant way to end your vacation.

We estimate our meal and souvenir purchases before we ever leave home.  We've never had a problem staying within our budget.  Perhaps that is one of the reasons that charging purchases to our room works out so well for us.  It can be a very convenient way to pay; you just have to decide whether it's the right choice for your spending and vacation habits.
