Hello, we are planning a Walt Disney World trip for this Thanksgiving and I have a three-year old son who has Ketotic Hypoglycemia and Metabolic Acidosis. If we stay at a Disney Resort, what medical support would be available to us?

Hi, Elizabeth!  Walt Disney World is very accommodating of special needs, and I hope you can have a stress free vacation!

Every park has a first aid center and registered nurse.  They are equipped for some minor emergencies and can help with storing medications or medical equipment that you might need while in the theme parks.  In the event of an emergency requiring attention they are unable to provide, emergency services will be notified, and a van or an ambulance will be provided to take you to an urgent care clinic or the nearest hospital.

I've had an incident at a resort that required a call to 911.  Resort staff were able to provide me a tremendous amount of assistance, and paramedics were dispatched to the resort within minutes.  Everything ended well, thanks to the quick response from the Walt Disney World cast members and emergency services.

For special dietary concerns, specifically metabolic disorders, you can send an email at least two weeks in advance to Special.Diets@DisneyWorld.com.  They can help arrange special meals that will be considerate of your son's metabolic disorder and any special dietary needs.

Your resort room will have a small refrigerator, so any medication or special foods or beverages you are bringing with you that need to be kept cold can be stored right there in your room.  If you have medical supplies, you can ship them to your resort ahead of time.  Just make sure they are clearly marked with your name and your arrival date on the outside of the package.

You might also want to get a Guest Assistance Card from guest services at the theme park.  A short note from your doctor might be able to explain to cast members how they can better help you have a magical experience!
