We are planning to visit in June. We are traveling w/other members of my family and would like to be in the same hotel w/rooms close. We will need 4 rooms, but each will book/pay for their own. Should I book online or call?

I find it most effective with special requests to actually call and speak with a person on the phone. We traveled to WDW last month with my parents and stayed in a separate room from them. When we made the reservation, we each called and requested that we be put near each other in the hotel. There was a note on each of our reservations and when we arrived, we were given rooms almost directly across the hall from each other.

While the reservations cast members can't guarantee that special requests will be accommodated, in my experience, they really do try hard to make sure everyone is happy with their rooms. My suggestion is that someone representing each of the four rooms in your party call Disney reservations at 407-W-DISNEY and explain the situation. My guess is that they will be eager to help you.
