Hello! We are planning a trip to Disney World in Jan. of 2019. We are trying to decide between the first OR second week of Jan?? Are crowds considerably larger the first week? Or is it crowded all the time? We experienced Xmas crowds last year....

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel, Tina! Thank you for stopping by and for directing your question my way.

Tina, a day at the most magical place on earth is better than a day anywhere else. Even if it’s a busy day! With some solid planning, time saving FastPass+, tasty dining reservations, and scheduled breaks, your visit will be an enchanted one to remember.

Last year, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend was scheduled for that first week of January. What used to be a quieter time to visit, is now a pretty popular time to enjoy some endurance races throughout the resort. I personally like visiting early January because you can still enjoy a few leftover Christmas decorations and witness the seamless transformation of the parks and resorts during your visit. But if you rather avoid the marathon guests surge, I would recommend spacing your visit at least a week after the marathon since runners tend to schedule extended trips before and after the races.

Planning a visit around crowd predictions is tricky with so many different factors that can affect guest attendance. But if you have your heart set on trying to visit during slower time, I would recommend searching for crowd calendars online. They watch trends and consider special events and historical numbers to guesstimate crowds at the parks. It’s not a perfect science but they’re usually pretty close. My favorite is the one that Undercover Tourist offers.

I hope this helps as you dream up and plan your magical visit! Be sure to mark your calendar with all the important planning dates once you book your vacation package. You can start booking your FastPass+ 60-days in advance and all your dining reservations up to 180-days in advance.

Thanks again for stopping by. Be sure to bring us any further planning questions. Have a magical day!
