We are planning our first trip to WDW with our 9 and 7 year old daughters. Our younger daughter has Hirschsprung Disease and has had 9 surgeries since September. She has a colostomy now. What challenges should we prepare for in the parks with a colostomy?

    Hi Kelly ~

A first trip to Disney is always super exciting! As a Mom with a special needs son, I understand your concerns as this may take your daughter out of her comfort zone. I over prep for everything so I'm prepared as possible.

Speak with her doctor regarding any restrictions that she may have during the trip. If she is on any medications, make sure you have enough to get you through the trip and a little extra. Before your trip, research a location that you can get additional colostomy supplies in case of an emergency.

Create a checklist and make an organized bag for the parks with all the supplies ready to go that you'll need during the day including items for disposal and cleaning. Bring at least 1 more colostomy bag than you think you'll need as getting from parks to your resort may take awhile. Be sure to repack the bag each evening so you're ready for the next day.

There are companion restrooms located in each of the parks. You can also take your daughter to a First Aid location in the parks if you're more comfortable changing the colostomy bag there.

Make sure your daughter stays well hydrated. You can bring in your own non-glass water bottles to help avoid standing in line. If she has any dietary restrictions, research locations in the parks that can accommodate her needs. If you are dining at any Table Service locations, make a note when making dining reservations and ask to speak with a Chef when you arrive.

If she'll need it, request a Disability Service Access Card (DAS) from Guest Relations. Here are some details explaining how the DAS works. If she tires easily, rent a stroller or wheelchair for her.

I'm limited in space but please feel free to visit again.

Wishing you minnie magical memories :-) Allison V.
