We are planning our first trip in Jan with our daughters (4 and 2). We plan to visit AK and MK during our 2 day visit. But which is better for nighttime entertainment for our kids- downtown disney or the boardwalk?

    Hi Rachel!

A first trip to Walt Disney World!  How exciting!

My children, ages 5 and 10, have always enjoyed visiting Downtown Disney and Disney's Boardwalk.  However, without a doubt, if they could only select one to visit, they would pick Downtown Disney over the Boardwalk.  A family can have a great time at the Boardwalk.  Simple things like just walking or riding a bicycle on it and/or around Crescent Lake is relaxing and fun.  However, a lot of the activities at the Boardwalk is geared with older guests in mind, such as the dueling piano bar at Jellyrolls and the Atlantic Dance Hall.

Downtown Disney also has several activities directed at older guests, but there are plenty of things for the children to see and do, especially if they, or you, like to shop!  The World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney is the largest Disney character store on Earth!  Children love shopping in there and at Once Upon a Toy.  I always have to drag my children away!  If you go to Downtown Disney, be sure to visit the Lego Imagination Center!  There's an interactive play area for children!

Downtown Disney has some unique dining experiences.  However, two restaurants that look perfect for children, the Rainforest Cafe and T-Rex, may be too scary for very young guests.  On the other hand, I have never met a young guest who wouldn't enjoy a snack in the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop!

If you have the time, and the energy, you might try visiting both locations.  Have a magical vacation!
