Planning a Disney Cruise/WDW trip for our family of 11 in 4/12, to celebrate our 45th anniversary. We want to have golf shirts embroidered with a logo that includes the MM icon, and know an embroidery place. Can the icon be used in this way? Thanks!

    Hi Robert,

    Happy anniversary in advance!

I believe what you're asking is - can you use a Disney-licensed logo (Mickey) for personal use? I'm not a lawyer - so you may want to consult your attorney on this one - but my personal reaction to this is that you'll be fine as long as you just use the shirts yourself and don't try to sell them.

    Here's my thinking:

    - I have seen MANY home-made Disney-themed shirts in the parks over the years. It is extremely common for family reunions, sports teams, school groups, and birthday party go-ers to wear personalized trip shirts with images of Mickey (or other characters) on them.

    - I know of at least half a dozen moms panelists who have created their own personal group shirts using Disney logos, both before and after they joined the panel. They have received nothing but praise and admiration from Disney cast members.

    - The Disney company licenses embroidery logos for use with personal and commercial sewing machines (Brother brand as well as others). They wouldn't create such a product if they didn't expect people to use it.

If you're at all concerned, you could make your custom shirts through DisneyStore.com, where they have numerous personalized shirt and hoodie options. But my personal opinion is that this won't be necessary. Go ahead and wear those anniversary shirts with pride - and have a wonderful time on your trip.

You certainly have something to celebrate!
