Crossing the Finish Line

My partner and I would love to do the W&D Half Marathon on our first two-week Disney holiday. However, the race would fall at the end of our stay. We want to enjoy our holiday in full and not think about training and eating. Doable or better to wait?

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel, Lenette! I ran this very same event in January, along with my friends for what I call a “racecation!” It’s the best of both worlds, because how could you stay at Walt Disney World Resort and not be a part of the fun? From the attractions to dining locations and living in the moment, you’ll stay busy!

If you really want to run at the end of your vacation, I would highly recommend taking the last few days of your holiday easy. Visit Disney Springs in the morning, float in the pool or enjoy your Resort’s amenities and get to bed early a few days in a row. The last thing you want to do is waste your legs before a big race comes up. Walking around property in the early days of your trip will be good enough cardio and keep you from getting stiff, but you’ll want to avoid being tired late in your vacation. Have a good carb-loaded meal the night before your race and remember to hydrate all trip long. That’s one way to ruin a race… being dried out! As for eating well, just make sure you’re paying good attention to your body in the 2-3 days before the race. Eat smart (not overindulge), hydrate, go to bed early, and rest (or do easy activities). That way, you’ll be able to take on the world!

Of course, a 2 week-long holiday means that you may need to have 1 last training run before you head off to the fun. There are jogging trails at nearly every Resort, and a few health clubs if you want to take on the treadmill. Following the Jeff Galloway model of training is the SMARTEST way to train for a race. I hope to see you at the finish line, and let me know if I can help further. Ready, Set, GO! ~ Lindsey P.
