What are the parking lots like at closing time for the theme parks? How long does it usually take to get out and back on the road, and how is traffic in the area? We usually rely on resort transportation, but we are considering driving our own car.

We usually rent a car during our WDW trips and we've never encountered long streams of traffic trying to exit the parking areas at closing time.  I think in part the traffic is so manageable because a large percentage of park guests use Disney transportation.  We've stayed until closing in all four of the parks and the longest lines to exit, in my experience, have always been at the Magic Kingdom (both for regular park closings and at the end of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party).  There are only two options for leaving the Magic Kingdom: boat or monorail.  Either mode of transportation will deliver you to the Ticket and Transportation Center where your car will be waiting.  Once you actually arrive at the parking lot, much of the crowd seems to have dissipated and you shouldn't have any trouble getting out of the lot; it's the getting to the lot that can sometimes by trying.  I wouldn't worry about it; the "exit traffic" at the parks is quite easily navigated.
