If you have an original magic band (the first one) and never used it, would the battery still work to use it now? I bought the magic band in 2016 and didn’t end up using it. Or can you still buy the old magic band anywhere online?

Hello Raevyn, and welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel with a great question.

MagicBands are one of my favorite Disney Parks souvenirs! Not just because they are stylish or can represent a particular attraction, special event or limited release item. MagicBands are hard pieces of wearable technology that act as the key to your Disney Resort Hotel room and access your admission tickets at theme park gates. You can easily redeem your FastPass+ experiences and upload PhotoPass Photos to your Memory Maker account. For guests staying on Disney property, you will have the convenience of charging food and merchandise back to your room account.

The only downside to MagicBands is that the battery in them is only good for approximately 2 years. Currently, there is no way to check the life of the battery in a MagicBand and no way to replace them. The original MagicBands have been phased out, and are no longer available for purchase since the upgraded second generation MagicBands were introduced in December of 2016. Even if your MagicBand has never been used, there is a good chance the battery has expired. If you are staying at a select Disney Resort Hotel for an upcoming visit, I would recommend ordering your complimentary MagicBands as a backup. You do not want to be locked out of your hotel room if your original MagicBand is not working. If you are not entitled to a complimentary MagicBand, I would recommend purchasing a new MagicBand online, through the Shop Disney Parks app, or in a Disney Theme Park or Disney Springs shop where they are sold. I would also recommend keeping the new MagicBand on hand while in the parks because even if your old MagicBand allows you to enter the park or redeem FastPass+ selections, it may not be strong enough to upload your onboard ride photos and videos to your Memory Maker account.
