I noticed that you did the gastric bypass. How have you changed your eating at WDW. They always have HUGE serving. My husband Is trying to loose weight for a kidney transplant because of diabetes. We want to make sure we keep the portions small.

Hi, Teresa!  The first good thing about being in Walt Disney World is that you have a chance for extra exercise!  I know that especially with diabetes, walking the whole time isn't always possible, but even short walks around the resort will help keep calories in check while on vacation.

The portions at many of the Walt Disney World dining locations are very generous, and it can be a problem while trying to watch your weight.  After my gastric bypass, my husband and I would share one entree between us, and if he felt like it wasn't enough, he'd order a salad.  Sharing is a great way to enjoy a nice meal while watching your weight.  Another thing I often did (and still do), is order a soup and an appetizer instead of ordering a full entree.  Sometimes, just an appetizer was enough of a portion.

Walt Disney World has sugar free dessert options in many locations, but keep in mind that sugar free doesn't mean carbohydrate free or fat free.  Counting carbs can be huge for a diabetic, and it's typically important to eat proteins first.  Keep that in mind when ordering meals.  I tend to focus on the protein, and then ask them to either skip side dishes altogether, or I'll ask for a salad or a vegetable in place of rice or potatoes.

Fortunately, you'll find healthy options just about everywhere you turn.  Grab a fresh piece of fruit instead of a Mickey bar, and if you're craving a DoleWhip, order the fresh pineapple spears instead.  And always feel comfortable asking at the restaurant if they can prepare something differently - without breading, grilling instead of frying, without sauce - to help curb calories.

Have a great vacation, and I will keep your husband in my thoughts and prayers!
