i am NOT a runner & am signing up for first 1/2 marathon in 2013. do u have any tips for training other than the jeff galloway, which i will use? i am going to start training in a few weeks & need all the help i can get. i live in TX so weather is

Hi Melissa!  First of all, once you put on your tennis shoes and run (even if it is just to the end of your driveway), then you ARE totally a runner!  I think we all have a misconceived notion that to BE a runner, you have to A) run really fast, B) run A LOT, and C) have an Olympian's body!  Thankfully, I have learned that that is NOT the case!  Runners come in all shapes, sizes, and speeds.  I truly think that Mr. Jeff Galloway has had a huge helping hand in breaking the mold.

So, you are off to a good start!  You have a plan to follow from a professional.  My advice to you is to take it slowly and don't expect to love every single minute of it.  There are days that I truly enjoy my runs, and there are days when I cannot wait for them to be over.  The only constant is that I ALWAYS feel better after I run.  Sure, I may be a little sore or tired, but the physical and mental benefits of being active cannot be measured.

As for weather, I suggest investing in some good running gear.  Since it will probably be hot in Texas, get some "sweat-wicking" shirts to help keep it from pasting to your body, and definitely some shorts that won't ride up.  I have trained for races in the heat of the summer and also running on snow and ice.  It's all about the gear!  And of course, especially when it is hot, you want to be sure to stay hydrated.

Remember what Jeff Galloway says, "The momentum of putting one foot in front of the other, is more important than the pace"!

You can do it Melissa!  Let me know which race you are coming for and we can start planning your runDisney vacation!!
